In the small town of Lovely, Ontario, every letter passes through the hands of postmistress Marie-Louise Painchaud. Cheeky and cheerful, Marie-Louise – performed exceptionally by singer/actor Patricia Cano, who embraces Chartier’s choreography with brio – delights in living vicariously through stories shared in letters mailed from all over the world. Featuring piano and saxophone, the musical stylings evoke these faraway places – samba, bossa nova, tango, Dixieland and Berlin Cabaret rap.
The (Post)Mistress is based on the book by writer-composer-pianist Tomson Highway and reminds us that in life, you should never mail it in. This production sung in French, English and Cree has been performed in several Canadian cities to great acclaim.
